About Us
"Loyal Service Deserves Lasting Care”
About us
Our K9 Teams are assigned to our patrol division, where they primarily handle calls for service throughout the city. When circumstances arise that meet the strict criteria for a K9 deployment, the Team will respond to that location and assist with the search and/or apprehension. The K9 team is subject to call out on their days off when needed, and will also respond to neighboring cities when requested for mutual aid.
Once our K9’s reach retirement age, the Handler has the option of purchasing the K9 from the City of Glendora and keeping the K9 as a pet.
Our History

GPD began our Police K9 Program in 2000, when we chose our first K9 Team. A K9 team consists of an officer, who is known as the “Handler,” and the working K9. Once a dog is chosen, it is paired with the Handler, who becomes responsible for everything the K9 needs. The K9 lives in the home with the officer and his family, and comes to work with him each shift.
Our K9’s have all been purchased through Adlerhorst International, which is a well known and reputable organization that has one of the most successful and comprehensive training programs for law enforcement K9 Teams.
When purchased, the K9’s are already highly trained, and once the team is chosen, they attend a six week, intensive training course, where they learn how to work together, K9 law, and liability, among other things. Once the team passes training, they come back to the Glendora Police Department where they are put into service. In addition to the initial six-week training course, our K9 Team trains weekly, monthly and annually in excess of 300 additional hours per year to maintain the perishable skills that are required.
